In Romania’s south-western Carpathians, ageing dams are a major threat to local biodiversity. These dams disrupt the natural flow of rivers, leading to a serious decline in migrating freshwater fish, such as sturgeon and salmon. A collaboration between WWF and local authorities focuses on removing two non-functional dams in the Caraș gorges. This approach will restore 138 kilometres of river habitat. Our donation will support local efforts to remove these dams, which is essential for restoring ecology and promoting biodiversity in the region.
This amount has been used for co-funding (20%) the removal of two outdated dams in the Caraș Gorges in Romania, including the cost of contractors and necessary works
Have donated the initial amount of 10.000 euro that was doubled by SNP
By removing obsolete barriers, we can once again have healthy free-flowing rivers full of fishes.
In the Caraș Gorges in Romania, ageing dams are causing a decline in migrating fish species. Therefore, these dams are being removed to restore the natural flow of the rivers, which not only promotes biodiversity but also restores the benefits of a healthy ecosystem to the local community.
The (co-fund) donation is used for two purposes:
Dam removal: The contribution covers the cost of removing two outdated dams, including hiring contractors and necessary works.
Ecological restoration: The donation supports activities to monitor the ecological impact and restore biodiversity in the Caraș Gorges after dam removal.
