Creating aquatic ponds for amphibians and odonates

This project arises in response to the increasing loss of aquatic habitats due to human
activity and climate change. The aim is to create two ponds that will serve as breeding
areas for amphibians and odonates, as well as foraging grounds for bats and watering
points for mammals and terrestrial birds. This action seeks to reverse the negative trend
affecting many of these species by providing them with suitable and functional habitat in
an area where such ecosystems are becoming increasingly scarce.

A broader strategy in restoring biodiversity

The ponds will be located in strategic areas where a significant positive impact on the ecosystem is expected, especially for vulnerable species and in regions with a lack of permanent water sources. This is not an isolated action, but part of an ongoing program of pond creation that we have been developing for several years. It represents a further step in our restoration efforts, improving the ecological quality of Mediterranean habitats affected by climate change and fragmentation.

Where is the donation of GBTN spend on?

The project will result in the creation of two aquatic environments. These new ponds will hold water semi-permanently, providing suitable habitat for the target species, which depend on these conditions for breeding and survival. The intervention aims not only to improve local biodiversity but also to raise awareness of the ecological importance of Mediterranean temporary aquatic ecosystems, which support a high diversity of species and are increasingly rare. The ponds will serve as reference sites for future
conservation actions and environmental education

More info on the project

Salvatgines has been active for 8 years, working to demonstrate that it is possible to create a positive impact on biodiversity through local and concrete actions. The organization aims to achieve real and tangible improvements in the ecological quality of the region’s most sensitive ecosystems. It has also created ponds for wildlife and planted fruit trees to feed the brown bear (Ursus arctos)
