Introduction of a new herd of Garrano horses | Faia Brava reserve in Portugal

The aim of this project is to improve biodiversity in the North part of Faia Brava through the introduction of a herd of Garrano horses. The breed is well adapted to the local climate, is capable of finding water, does not show diseases, and keeps the vegetation in a healthy and biodiverse condition.

Garrano horses

are necessary for the new herd to graze the North part of the reserve

Grazing with small herds of horses ensures the best results for increasing the biodiversity

Faia Brava is presently hosting two herds of adult horses (4 females and a male per herd), all registered in the national breed register (“blue book of the race”). One of the herds lives in the Western part of the Reserve and the second one in the South-East. With all the accumulated experience, it is now the right moment to introduce a new herd in the North-East with animals registered in the national breed register. These animals will have to be identified and bought outside our boundaries to increase the genetic variability of the population.

Where is the donation of GBTN spent on?

The donation is used for the creation of a small natural pasture land to create a good start for the new herd. Fencing is needed as well as the purchase of the carefully selected horses. A small removable corral is bought so the horses can be fed and adjust to their new surroundings. When brought ito the wild there will be monitoring by the rangers. A small video will be made to show the success of this project.

The Natura Iberica Foundation was established in 2015 to support and promote environmental sustainability in the Iberian Peninsula. We do this by contributing to the economic sustainability of Portuguese and Spanish nature conservation organizations. Since our inception, we have focused our efforts mainly on the nature reserve Faia Brava in northeast Portugal.
